Weather Eye: We’re on our way to wrapping up the wettest month of the year

What a great day it was Saturday, with skies clearing early and sunshine and mild temperatures greeting us all. A nice break from the days and days of continual rain.

However, the break was short-lived as another system flaunts it moisture overhead today with showers. Yet another system was forming off the Oregon Coast and was forecast to bring stormy conditions along the coast and yes, more rain locally Monday and Tuesday.

This is our fourth-rainiest October so far with 6.69 inches measured in the old rain bucket as of Saturday. That was 4.50 inches above average. We could add another couple of inches to that total.

Computer forecast models are once again at odds over the rest of the month. It could be wet and stormy as we have had, or we could see high pressure build midweek and last through the weekend for some dry weather.

Do you know that some locations in the Coast Range mountains and the Cascades have had more than 20 inches of rain this month? Amazing after the dry summer we had.

That 6.69 inches Vancouver has had means we’ll easily surpass January’s 7.10 inches this month. The last really wet month was December, with 16.03 inches. Remember that one? We had only three days without measurable rainfall.

Well-known meteorologist Joe Bastardi, who used to be on cable weather channels, is predicting a much different winter for ski country this year. “It should be rocking by Thanksgiving,” he says.

That would bring happy faces to those that love to slip slide down the slopes.
