Students bite apples in unison to honor Washington

Five Corners — Lunch was particularly loud at Silver Star Elementary School on Oct. 6, as students and teachers participated in an “apple crunch,” all biting into apples at the same time. The crunch was in honor of Taste Washington Day, a joint effort between the state Department of Agriculture and Washington School Nutrition Association celebrating locally grown food. It was also the start of Evergreen Public Schools’ Harvest of the Month campaign, in which the district will offer special lunch menu items and nutrition education. The Harvest of the Month campaign is a collaboration between Washington State University Extension’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education program and Ecotrust, a conversation group, and Chartwells, the district’s food service company.
