The 13-year-old boy accidentally shot Sunday afternoon at a Yacolt-area home has died, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

The boy, whose name was not released, died at a local hospital Sunday after being shot, reportedly by a 13-year-old cousin, who’s name also was not released.

A sheriff’s deputy at the scene told KOIN-TV that, at the time of the shooting, the boys were playing in the home while the parents were upstairs.

Deputies said that a .30-caliber hunting rifle was accidentally discharged during the incident, which occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday at a residence along Northeast Thompson Road.

The injured boy was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.

The sheriff’s office declined to reveal further details. Detectives with the agency’s major crimes unit continue to investigate.

The boy was a student at Amboy Middle School, according to Battle Ground Public Schools spokeswoman Rita Sanders.

Members of local School Mobilization Assistance Response Teams, which include counselors trained in providing emotional first aid and support after a crisis, were at the school Monday, Sanders said.
