Weather Eye: In the aftermath of the storms, some September rainfall totals

As I write my column Saturday, I am looking out the window at heavy rain moving across horizontally pushed by brisk south winds. I am spending the weekend at the Long Beach Peninsula and enjoying good stormy weather.

I decided to start writing my column earlier than usual in case of a power outage. The past several days, we have had tons of rain and wind and numerous thunderstorms, and a couple of tornadoes to boot. Feisty weather, and it is only mid-October.

We have had heavy rainfall so far this month, with Vancouver topping the 5-inch mark, about 3.75 inches above average. That was as of noon Saturday. That is incredible.

I want to share last month’s rainfall from your friends and neighbors so you can compare it to what we have this month: Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 1.56 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 1.64 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 4.64 inches; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 3.80 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 1.92 inches; Pete Conrad near Tukes Mountain, 1.61 inches; Merle Moore, 2 miles west of Yacolt, 2.94 inches; Dan Hein, Camas, 2.44 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 1.11 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 1.55 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 1.20 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 2.04 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 1.28 inches; Murphy Dennis, Rawson Road near Clark County Rifles, 3.87 inches; and Roland Dersken from Vancouver BC , 3.05 inches. The official rainfall for Vancouver was 1.15 inches, 0.41 inch below average.

So, the rain let up a bit, winds died down after a peak gust north of Ocean Park of 70 mph, and the power stayed on here at the Long Beach Peninsula as I wrote this column. The storm was maybe less than forecast, but that is always a good thing.
