Our own Tom Vogt was honored by some local Korean War vets

Esther Short — Columbian reporter Tom Vogt had some surprise visitors Oct. 7, when members of the Korean War Veterans Association’s Richard L. Quatier Chapter 321 of Southwest Washington stopped by the newsroom. The group presented Vogt with a plaque for his years of writing about veterans and veteran issues.

Vogt has been with The Columbian for nearly 43 years, the last 15 of which he has spent writing about veterans, history and local heritage.

Vogt thanked the group for the plaque, and said the story of Pfc. William Butz’s returning home after being buried 66 years ago in Hawaii shows why it’s important to keep writing about veterans today. “A local soldier who was killed the Korean War in 1950 was buried in Vancouver two months ago, which shows how some of our wars from decades ago are still affecting local families.”
