Weather Eye: Prepare for moderate to heavy rain today in Clark County

Boy, where do I start? Maybe wiping the mud off my face from the “warm, dry weekend” forecasters promised? Oh well, thick-skinned, I am. Not all that looks promising comes to fruition. That includes computer weather forecast models. Hopefully some of you retrieved pumpkins Saturday.

When we made the forecast last week of a nice weekend, we knew the storm track would be close but thought it would remain farther north.

High winds pelted the Washington coastline from north to south Thursday night — nearly 60 mph at Forks to 50 mph at Ocean Park on the Long Beach Peninsula. There was some slight damage as limbs and fences felt the brunt of the winds. Early fall pruning.

It was gusty locally as well with winds 25 to 35 mph. Rainfall was on the paltry side with less than a tenth of an inch in Vancouver. On Saturday, it was dry all day and near 70 degree; we just missed the sunny part.

But as of 5 p.m., it was already blowing and raining along the Washington Coast as a front was draped across the state north of the Columbia River. This was a harbinger of things to come. Moderate to heavy rain will drop down over Clark County today and we will see 1 to 3 inches of rain with upward of 5 inches along the Coast Range and Cascades.

We will see a rapid rise in river levels and urban flooding if the forecast holds. Fair weather is the flip side for a few days before October presents more moisture. As we dry out Monday through Wednesday, forecast charts show what we call an “atmospheric river” setting up, transporting copious amounts of rain from offshore.
