A 15-year-old Hudson’s Bay High School student was critically injured Thursday when he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle near East Mill Plain Boulevard and East Reserve Street.

The Vancouver Police Department said the teen was on his bike when, around 8:30 a.m., he attempted to cross Mill Plain Boulevard heading south. It appeared he didn’t activate the crosswalk signal, the police said, then rode out in front of an SUV traveling west on Mill Plain.

The driver could not stop in time, the police said, and struck the teen. The 15-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to the police.

Police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said the boy is a student at Hudson’s Bay High School. More information about the boy and the SUV driver was not available.

The SUV driver stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation, the police said.

The department said nothing indicates excessive speed or driver impairment were factors in the collision.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the crash, and officers had the roadway blocked into the early afternoon as they reviewed the scene.
