Esther Short — Friends in Service to Humanity, of FISH, completed its “Debt Free in 2016” campaign on Sept. 13, when leaders from the nonprofit handed in their final mortgage payment for the new FISH westside food pantry building at 906 Harney St., Vancouver, to the C.E. John Company. The pantry raised money to buy and renovate a commercial building for $1.3 million through a capital campaign and $1 million grant from the State of Washington Department of Commerce. The pantry and clothes distribution center serves approximately 1,200 households per month. The Harney Street location opened last October.
