DOJ grant to help fund equipment purchases

Clark County – The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has won more than $90,000 in grant money from the Department of Justice, money that will go to buying protective equipment for officers and deputies addressing other needs.

The grant typically comes every year, Undersheriff Mike Cooke said, and the office gives most of it to the Vancouver Police Department. This time around, 58 percent of the grant will go to Vancouver police.

Typically, the agencies use the grant to replace old stun guns or radios, or buy bullet-proof shielding, Cooke said.

Recently, the sheriff’s office used money from a previous grant to buy new software to speed up the background check process for potential hires, Cooke said.

“It’s a catch-all kind of a grant that is basically designed to fill in those one-off needs for agencies,” Cooke said.

Law enforcement agencies were awarded nearly $8 million for a range of projects, the department announced Tuesday. The grants were broadly categorized as for forensic science, records improvement and DNA test backlog reduction.
