In advance of the general election next month, the League of Women Voters of Clark County will host its annual candidate forums for local and state races.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, candidates for the 18th Legislative District, Clark County council District 4 and Clark Public Utilities commissioner will face off at Cedars Golf Course Restaurant, 15001 N.E. 81st St., Brush Prairie, according to a news release.

The forum, co-hosted by the Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce, will also feature a lunch. Chamber members who pre-register by calling 360-687-1510 will pay $17. All others, who can pay in advance or at the door, will pay $20. There will also be free seating available for those who do not want to eat.

The second forum is at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Cascade Park Community Library at 600 N.E. 136th Ave., Vancouver. Candidates for the 49th and 17th legislative districts and Clark County council District 3 races will attend.

Under the county charter, county councilors are elected by district, except for the chair.

Ballots will be mailed from the Clark County Elections Office on Oct. 19, giving voters a chance to hear from candidates for all local and state offices before returning their ballots.

Judy Hudson, a member of the League of Women Voters of Clark County, said the forums give voters the chance to hear from candidates whose ideas and personalities they may not know well.

“When you do vote, or if you’re reluctant to vote, have some confidence in voting,” she said. “You know who is running, what they look like, how they present. That’s big.”
