Two young people were wounded late Friday night in a shooting at a Vancouver waterfront park after local high school students argued with another group, according to Vancouver Police.

No suspects have been arrested in the incident. Patrol officer Brian Schaffer said on Saturday that the victims’ injuries were “minor.”

Because the victims were juveniles, he said, their names will not be released. But he did say they are students at Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School in Vancouver, also known as HeLa.

The HeLa group was having a bonfire on the beach at Marine Park, 4501 S.E. Columbia Way, when they “got into a verbal with a bunch of Eastern European males,” Schaffer said.

Schaffer said “a couple of the males from the Eastern European side pulled out AR-15-style rifles and shot at the kids in the other group.”

Police were called to Marine Park at 10:50 p.m. for a report that a male subject had been shot in the leg. They also learned that a female with a gunshot wound in the leg had been taken to an urgent care clinic on Main Street in Vancouver. Both victims were transported to area hospitals. Schaffer called their injuries “minor” and “not life-threatening.”

According to radio traffic on Friday night, the shooters were described as two men in their 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing dark clothing. They were reportedly both armed with semi-automatic rifles similar to an AR-15 and driving a white or beige SUV.

Major crimes detectives from the Vancouver Police are investigating, Schaffer said.
