The American Heart Association – Oregon & Southwest Washington Division is preparing for American Heart Month in February with the launch of Little Hat, Big Hearts.

Through Little Hat, Big Hearts, volunteers knit or crochet little red hats for babies born at Portland metro hospitals throughout the month of February.

American Heart Month is when the heart association works to create awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects — the No. 1 birth defect in children.

The American Heart Association hopes to deliver 1,000 hats to hospitals this February and is calling on local volunteers to knit and crochet hats. Yarn donations are also being accepted.

Volunteers can visit the website, www.heart.org/littlehatsbighearts, to learn more about program specifics and sample patterns. Volunteers can also call Julia at 503-820-5302.

Hats are due no later than Jan. 3 to the American Heart Association’s Portland office, 4380 S.W. Macadam Ave. Suite 480.
