Weather Eye: Drop in temperatures seems to signal approaching holidays

Is the cooler weather getting you in the holiday spirit? It was quite a change last week, diving from the 60s close to 70 degrees down to the 30s and 40s. Did you have a frost early Friday morning in your neighborhood?

If you got up early, you probably did as high clouds rolled in at daylight capping the overnight lows. Vancouver officially dipped to 34 degrees, the coldest this season and coldest temperature since March 29 when it was 32 degrees. I had frost in Salmon Creek. Kind of strange to see your breath after weeks of warm weather.

But still not a freezing temperature, so the inner city waits a while. With lots of clouds and rain moving in through Thanksgiving weekend, it may well be December. We will get a break between weather systems early Tuesday, so lows could drop back into the upper 30s.

The big news this week is snow coming to the mountains. If things go as planned by next Sunday, we may have 2 or 3 feet of new snow in the ski areas. The mountain passes such as Government Camp may have a foot or more by then.

If traveling over the passes Wednesday, expect snow falling and perhaps snowy roadways. Likewise for traveling back Sunday. Looking ahead to early December, we should be in a cool, wet pattern for plenty of mountain snow, even some on the coast range passes.

For Thanksgiving Day, we will have rain and chilly temperatures: highs around 48 and lows around 38. A perfect day to remain inside with friends and family around the fire and for the Thanksgiving feast.

I will be at Sunriver and might just get lucky and have a white Thanksgiving. I’ll report in Sunday’s column how that went. Stay warm and dry, smile and have a great week.
