The Ray Hickey Foundation will pay for pet adoptions by veterans at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington through the end of the month.

This is an extension of a Veterans Day program, offering a way for veterans and active duty service members to come home to a loving animal every day. What began as a promotion for the holiday weekend has been extended to the end of November.

“It is my hope that more veterans can participate by extending the adoption deadline, and add a loving companion to their family,” said Linda Rae Hickey, with the foundation.

During the Veterans Day weekend, eight veterans adopted a total of nine animals.

The average fee for adopting a dog is $195; the average fee for a cat is $95.

The gift from the Ray Hickey Foundation also includes a licensing fee. Military identification when adopting is required.
