Weather Eye: This week might be right time to put on winter tires

This has been an amazing month, weather-wise, with the warmest start to November on record.

I just want to list the high temperatures so far this month, beginning with Nov. 1: 61, 65, 64, 68, 58, 61, 63, 68, 64, 68, 62 and 63 degrees. Hey, what was that 58 doing in there? No worry, each daily high temperature this month was above average.

One statistic that is below average is our rainfall. Through 4 p.m. Saturday, Vancouver had measured 1.15 inches, 1 inch below normal. Incoming storms later today and Monday will drive the water level in the rain bucket upward. We could see an inch of rain or more. Surely the coast and the foothills to our east will get a soaking.

I have been telling you since the month began that this coming week and beyond look cooler and wetter, and with snow in the mountains. Freezing levels will be above pass levels when we get a good shield of moisture overhead, but as the week goes along that will lower. Unfortunately, we dry out later in the week for a day or two but will see more moisture on the weekend.

The latest weather system that moved through Saturday brought good winds to the coast with wind speeds in the 35-50 mph range, normal for the season.

Five years ago today, we were also entering a cooler weather pattern. On Nov. 13, 2011, I wrote, “The rest of the week continues to trend towards colder and wetter weather. Snow levels will tumble by the end of the week with good mountains snows and maybe, just maybe, some local residents in the higher elevations around Clark County will see some snowflakes.”

OK, snow may fall in the mountains, but no snow for us in the lowlands and foothills in the short term. If traveling over the mountain passes for Thanksgiving, be prepared for winter driving conditions. Putting on winter tires will be much easier this week before the shops get busy.

Take care, and we will chat on Tuesday.
