A motorcycle rider was injured when he was rear-ended by one vehicle and run over by another Tuesday morning on state Highway 14. The driver who caused the crash had been distracted by a spider in the vehicle, according to police.

Joseph Matsuoka, 56, of Camas was riding a 1986 Honda VFR motorcycle west on the highway when he stopped for traffic near the 164th Avenue exit in Vancouver at about 6:25 a.m., according to the Washington State Patrol.

A westbound 2008 Volvo driven by Nathan Culver, 23, of Camas was distracted when a spider dropped from the ceiling of his vehicle and he lost focus of the road, WSP Trooper Will Finn said. The Volvo struck the motorcycle and Matsuoka fell to the ground, according to the State Patrol.

Another westbound vehicle, a 1999 Kia Sophia driven by Kathryn Hart, 20, of Wilsonville, Ore., then ran over Matsuoka before side-swiping a fourth vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Highlander, the State Patrol said.

Matsuoka suffered two broken legs and facial injuries and was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, Finn said. He was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday evening, according to hospital staff. No one else was injured.

Troopers said that distracted driving caused the collision and cited Culver for second-degree negligent driving.
