College Notebook: Locals have Clark volleyball primed for postseason

The Clark College volleyball plays its regular season finale at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Mt. Hood at the O’Connell Center.

The Penguins are locked into second place in the NWAC South division at 11-2, 26-9 overall.

Local sophomores playing their last home match for the Penguins include Melisa Ljuca (Mountain View HS), Dianne Walter (King’s Way Christian), and Gauleighyan Eastman (Prairie).

Clark, ranked No. 7 in the NWAC coaches poll, will open play in the NWAC Championship on Nov. 17 at Tacoma.

• Sacramento State senior Chloe Bartek (Columbia River) shot a 2-under 70 int he final round to finish tied for fifth and lead the Hornets to the team title at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii. Bartek shot 73-75-70 as the Hornets set a team record for a single round by shooting 5-under in the third round.

• Saint Martin’s senior Shannon Porter (Hockinson HS grad) placed third at the NCAA Division II West Region cross country championships at Billings, Mont. Her time was 21:16.64. She became the first female Saints runner to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships, which is at St. Leo, Fla., on Nov. 19.

Kavita Battan (Hockinson) recently led Idaho to its second straight Big Sky soccer title. She earned first-team all-conference honors while tallying five goals and four assists.

• Western State senior Georgia Porter (Hockinson) placed third at the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship with a time of 21:54 and qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.

• Arizona State sophomore Sammi Hampton (Skyview) lost to teammate and doubles partner Kassidy Jump in the championship singles match of the Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Tempe. It was the final competition of the fall tennis season.

• Eastern Washington sophomore Jennifer Lewis (Camas) placed third in the Doubles C bracket of the Bulldog Invitational at Spokane to close the fall schedule.

• Western Washington redshirt freshman Trevor Jasinsky (Camas) scored four points in 17 minutes of action as the Vikings lost to Washington 109-103 in an exhibition basketball game on Nov. 3.

• Alex McGarry, a Columbia River grad playing baseball at Tacoma Community College, will sign today to play at Oregon State starting with the 2017-2018 season.

• Erin Sprowls, a King’s Way 2013 graduate, just finished her collegiate volleyball career at George Fox university this past Saturday. She finished ninth all-time in blocks for the school with 198. She also had 676 kills.
