Girls State Cross Country: Camas 2nd in bid for third straight title

Mountain View's Craig finishes fourth in 3A

PASCO – The Camas girls cross country team needed a bit of good news.

The Papermakers had just fallen short of their goal, a third consecutive Class 4A title at the WIAA State Cross Country Championships in Pasco.

The state champion team automatically qualifies for the Nike BorderClash meet, which matches top runners from Oregon and Washington later this month. Camas was uncertain whether the second-place team Saturday would also go.

A BorderClash representative assured the Camas runners that yes, they had qualified.

That’s when the tears began flowing.

It was some welcome relief after Camas finished second in the 4A girls team race. The Papermakers’ 108 points was 18 behind Issaquah.

Emma Jenkins led Camas with a fifth-place finish. But there was no repeat of last year, when three Papermakers finished in the top 13.

“I think all of us kind of had a tough race,” Jenkins said. “We have sick people, but that’s just how it is. We can’t change anything about that. I think Borderclash gives us hope to do better.”

Jenkins and Skyview’s Ellen Burbank worked together throughout the race, which saw Taylor Roe of Lake Stevens win by more than 20 seconds. Jenkins was 47 seconds behind Roe, covering the 5,000 meter course at Sun Willows Golf Course in 18:21. Burbank finished eighth in 18:30.

“I didn’t run my best time, but I’m still happy because I gave it my all,” Jenkins said. “That’s all you can do.”

Savanna Craig was all smiles Saturday. The Mountain View senior capped her high school cross country career with a fourth-place finish in the 3A race.

“I felt really strong, especially in the beginning,” she said. “I just felt great, like I can do this. It was a little bit slower than I expected, but I’m glad with the race overall.”

Instead of a lead pack, the race saw the top four runners separated by several seconds. That was just fine for Craig, who won the Westside Classic regional title by nearly a minute last weekend.

“When I’m on my own, like I was at regionals, I get in a zone and just go,” Craig said. “I think I run better when I’m alone.”

Craig finished in 18:14, 30 seconds behind winner Jordan Oakes of Holy Names Academy in Seattle.

La Center freshman Natasha Lewis ran the best race of her young cross country career thus far. She finished ninth in the 1A race in 19:24, a personal best by 11 seconds.

“I wasn’t expecting to get top ten,” Lewis said. “I was so nervous. I didn’t know what to expect, so I just went out and ran my race and acted like it was any other race.”

The La Center girls placed fourth in the 1A team race.
