Weather Eye: Temperatures will take us on roller coaster ride

I say we managed to pull off another nice holiday weekend after somewhat of a rocky start weather-wise in parts of Western Washington. I think Monday was ideal in Vancouver, with an afternoon high of 76 degrees, still about 6 degrees above average.

Today will see the thermometer climb to uncomfortable readings for most — around 90 degrees. Then a roller coaster ride the next several days, with temperatures up and down. Wednesday it drops to the low 80s, upper 70s Thursday, mid-80s Friday and in the 90s Saturday and Sunday. Boy, that is weather with a mood.

Longer-range forecast models were showing some hot weather into June, so it appears that is on the way. New longer-range charts Monday afternoon are now showing cooler temperatures and maybe some showers after next weekend. We’ll see. A few hot days and a few cool days? Better than hot and hot and hot.

We haven’t checked how we are doing statistic-wise for a while, so let’s see how the first 30 days of this month have gone. The average mean temperature is 60.5, 2.5 degrees above average; rainfall looks like it will end up at 1.63 inches, 0.80 of an inch below average. So our trend of warm and dry months continues.

The month of June is when thoughts of summer really get going, especially when schools get out around midmonth. The weather can offer up some really warm temperatures while students and teachers are trying to end the year’s studies.

The typical June day sees morning clouds with afternoon clearing and highs in the 70s, maybe 80 or so. And let’s not forget those pleasant brisk northwest evening breezes.

We are looking forward to the full strawberry moon on June 20 and hopefully skies will be clear. It came from long ago, when the Algonquin tribes knew it was time to gather fruit. It can also be referred to as the full rose moon. We luck out with both, as strawberries and roses abound here.
