The Portland Timbers will be paired against CD Drag?n of El Salvador and Deportiva Saprissa of Costa Rica for the group phase of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League.

The schedule for the group phase, which begins in August, will be announced in June.

This is the second time the Timbers have qualified for the CCL, which is a competition that involves 24 teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Timbers, who qualified by winning the 2015 MLS Cup championship, will play each team once at home and once on the road. The winner of the group advances to knockout phase.

In 2014-15, the Timbers did not advance from group play, going 3-1 but losing to Olimpia of Honduras on an away-goals tiebreaker.

Saprissa have won the championship of Costa Rica’s top league 32 times. Dragon won the second-half championship of El Salvador’s top league, its first top-division trophy since 1953.
