Weather Eye: Get ready for sun, heat after Memorial Day

The first part of the long holiday weekend got off to a rocky start Friday, with lots of clouds and some scattered showers. On Saturday, despite occasional cloudiness, the sunshine helped push the mercury to 70 degrees.

The rest of Western Washington was not so lucky. The Washington Coast from Long Beach northward had rain off and on all day Saturday with strong winds between 15 and 35 mph. Rainfall amounts were generally a half-inch or more. Puget Sound fared better with mostly clouds. North of there, rain most of the day.

In my column Thursday, that is what I was concerned about — just how far the rain belt would sag southward. Fortunately, it held just to our north. The Oregon Coast south of Astoria had clear blue skies! As the weather front slowly moves eastward today, one last bout of clouds and showers is forecast to swing through. Clark County will be on the ragged end, so don’t be surprised if a few showers or drizzle fall. Maybe we will luck out again.

After Sunday, there is nothing but clear skies and sunshine heading our way. Temperatures will be in the 80s to 90 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday. Beyond that, south moisture may move north from California and bring a risk of thunderstorms. So stay tuned for that outcome. Overall, though, warm and mostly dry the next week or so.

Summer kicks off on Memorial Day, and with hot weather this coming week I’m heading for a tropical snow cone at the stand on Highway 99 and Northeast 117th Street. So many outside activities shaping up here in Clark County, and the great weather will add to the scene.

So, OK, as in the recent heatwaves in April and early May, you know the drill. Get the patio or deck ready, shorts and sandals nearby and enjoy the hot, sunny weather heading our way. We’ll chat, iced tea in hand, on Tuesday.
