Boys state track: Union’s King, Washougal’s Bischoff save best for last (video)

Union's King rallies to place second in 4A discus

TACOMA – Bailey King was competing in more than a discus event on Friday.

He was also in a boxing match of sorts. Adrenaline was the opponent.

“I had a tough time early on,” King said. “Adrenaline was kicking my ass a little bit.”

But King fought back. The Union senior had his best throws late and placed second at the state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School.

After struggling in the preliminary flights, King threw 173 feet on his next-to-last attempt to move into second place.

He then threw 180 feet, 2 inches on his final throw. That was just 10 inches off his season best, which was the best mark this season among 4A contestants.

“I figured out what I was doing wrong,” King said. “It was there, but it didn’t quite come together.”

Defending champion Nolan Van Amen led wire to wire. The South Kitsap senior went over 183 feet on his first throw, eventually winning in 184-8.

“Nolan pretty much won on the first throw so it was tough to battle back,” King said.

Washougal’s Joshua Bischoff also had his best throw at the end. He added a fourth-place medal in the 2A shot put to his second-place finish in the discus Thursday.

The senior was sixth entering his final toss. On the final attempt of his high school career, Bischoff had a personal-best of 50 feet, 5.75 inches.

“On my last throw, my coach told me to think of one thing that I should do and put all my force into that one thing,” Bischoff said. “So I choose to put my arm out as far as I could. That gave me the distance I needed.”

Hockinson senior Kedrick Johnson added a fifth-place medal in the triple jump to the 2A long jump title he won the previous day. He dislocated his shoulder on his final leap Thursday and was one foot off his season best Friday.

Woodland’s Jacob Davis placed fourth in the 110 hurdles finals.

In Friday’s preliminary heats, Union’s Jilven Refil clocked the fastest times in the 100 meters (10.87 seconds) and 200 meters (22.29). He entered the state meet with the fastest times in both events.

Camas senior Adam Ryan’s 800 meter time of 1:53.19 was the fastest in Friday’s preliminaries and the third-best time this season in Class 4A. He also ran the fifth-fast preliminary time in the 400 meters.
