Weather Eye: Don’t expect great weather during Memorial Day weekend

I wish I had better news for the holiday weekend, like sunny skies and highs in the 80s. That might be the forecast after the holiday, as forecasts indicate drier conditions and higher temperatures next week. In the next few days, however, expect a couple of weather systems to drop down the coastline that will usher in more marine clouds and scattered showers. The high temperature will struggle to get to 60 degrees, unless we have a few sun breaks.

If you are heading to the hills for camping, note that snow levels will be low, making for a not-so-comfortable outing. Weather at the coast may be clear, and any showers left around Saturday afternoon into Sunday will fall inland.

We have had many pleasant weekends this spring, and it would be nice to have similar weather this weekend. Still, I’m sure that barbecue will get in just fine.

Other parts of the country are having miserable weather. I saw a video of the tornado that hit just south of Dodge City, Kan., on Tuesday. It was filmed extremely close-up, so if you watch it (http://tinyurl.com/zy7o755), enlarge your browser window and turn up the sound.

Last Memorial Day weekend was dry but cloudy and cool, with lots of low clouds and highs in the 60s. In the days following, the skies cleared, and temperatures reached the 70s and 80s. We will see a repeat this year, but as a cold trough wanders eastward Monday, the high will reach the 70s.

Enjoy your weekend, and remember those who defended our country with the greatest sacrifice.
