University of Washington junior Colby Gilbert won the men’s 5,000-meter run at the Pacific-12 Conference outdoor track and field championships held for the first time at UW’s Husky Track.
The Skyview High School graduate helped the Huskies claim second place to Oregon, the program’s highest finish since placing second in the Pac-8 meet in 1976.
Gilbert broke the UW school record with his time of 13 minutes, 35.20 seconds, becoming the first Husky to win the men’s 5,000 in the 57-year history of the Pac-8, Pac-10 and Pac-12 championships.
Gilbert also placed sixth in the 1,500 meters with a personal record of 3:40.99.
Both his 1,500 and 5,000 times rank as fourth-fastest in program history.
Gilbert is seeded No. 3 in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round meet Thursday through Saturday at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. The fastest 12 of 48 entrants will advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
Baseball: GNAC honors Hadley
Concordia University senior pitcher Austin Hadley has been honored by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for both his performance on the field and in the classroom.
The Evergreen High School graduate was named All-GNAC First Team and as also selected for the GNAC Baseball All-Academic team.
Hadley started nine of his 11 appearances on the mound for CU and went 5-4 with a 2.48 earned run average. He pitched seven complete games and struck out 61 batters. Hadley’s .219 batting average against led the GNAC.
He earned a degree in chemistry with a cumulative grade point average of 3.36. All-Academic honors require at least sophomore standing while having completed at least one season at one’s current school, with at least a 3.20 GPA and earning a varsity letter in a sport.
• Concordia senior infielder Cole Buruse, a Skyview High School graduate with a 3.20 GPA in business administration, was also named GNAC All-Academic.
Golf: Chico State, Docherty second in NCAA-II
Chico State senior Alistair Docherty helped the Wildcats to runner-up finishes in both stroke play and medal/match play at the NCAA Division II national golf tournament played last week at Green Valley Ranch in Denver.
The Union High School graduate carded even par 70-69-77–216 over 54 holes of stroke play, tying for 27th place.
In medal/match play, he won his matches as the Wildcats beat University of West Florida in the quarterfinals and Florida Southern College in the semifinals. He then fell to stroke play champion Hugo Bernard of St. Leo University, which defeated Chico State in the semifinals.
“It seems like just yesterday I was on my way to Indianapolis for my first college tournament,” Docherty told chicowildcats.com. “Time flies. It’s been an amazing experience, that’s for sure. My college golf career might be over, but I’m grateful that I’ll always be a Wildcat.”
