PASCO — Taylor Hartley had a lot of people on her mind after she completed the best 18-hole round in Union High School girls golf history.
“I did it with the support of my teammates, the support of a great coach, my family, my friends back home,” Hartley said. “And I really couldn’t have done it without believing in myself.”
Hartley, a senior, finished in a tie for second at the Class 4A state girls golf tournament Wednesday at Sun Willows Golf Course, recording a 1-under-par 71. She shot a 73 in Tuesday’s first round, giving her a two-day total at even par.
Her 71 and her place at state are school bests.
Oh, and that belief in herself actually is a belief in Southwest Washington girls golf.
Elise Filuk of Camas tied for sixth and led the Papermakers to a second-place finish in the team competition. Union was third. Titans and Papermakers were cheering for each other, as well.
“We showed the Seattle area that Southwest Washington is here to play,” Filuk said.
Bellarmine Prep did win its seventh consecutive team title, but the Titans and Papermakers were a little perplexed earlier in the week when they were told the Lions figured Eastlake was their only competition.
“Why not Union? Why not Camas?” Filuk said. “We definitely showed them.”
Filuk shot a personal best in tournament play, with an even-par 72 on Wednesday to tie for sixth after her 75 on Tuesday.
Reilly Whitlock of Union also earned a medal, finishing eighth with a 75-76.
Hartley said her secret to success is The Beatles. Seriously.
“The Beatles have always kept me calm,” she said, noting she sings “Strawberry Fields Forever” on the course.
She needed that song Tuesday when she had a triple-bogey on the third hole.
“Well, I’m done for,” she thought.
“Instead, I fired back.”
That 73, coming after a triple, was a great score, she said.
Then she topped it on Wednesday.
“Don’t focus on yesterday,” Hartley said. “It’s a 73, but so what? It’s a brand new day.”
She had a long, downhill birdie putt on 18 that traveled longer than she had hoped, giving her a tough second putt. She buried it for her 71.
“It was exhilarating. I felt great,” Hartley said. “This is how I get to go out with my high school career, a 73-71. I feel really good about that.”
Jalayne Martinez of Pasco won the tournament with a 2-under 142.
Filuk had an eagle on the par-5 15th hole Wednesday, needing just a 4-foot putt after an incredible second shot.
She also made a 20-foot shot that had a right-to-left slope on the green, using her putter from off the green on the 18th hole. The putt was described as a Tiger Woods shot, with the ball stopping at the hole for a few seconds before falling into the cup.
“I fell to my knees and turned away. Then I saw my team and they were all jumping up and down, screaming. I looked back, and the ball was gone. That was really, really cool.”
Camas’ second-place team finish is the best for a Clark County squad in 4A girls history.
“It’s just so awesome,” Filuk said. “We made a list of all of our goals this season, and we achieved every single one of them,” Filuk said. “I’m really proud to be captain of this team.”

Five Papermakers made the cut, helping with the team point total: After Filuk, there was Hailey Oster (78-77), Connie Wang (82-76), Emma Cox (79-86), and Abby Jiang (83-84).
Hartley and Whitlock medaled for the Titans. Karsyn Rushing also made the cut, finishing with an 82-84.
“I’m very proud of my team and I’m very proud of Camas’ team,” Hartley said. “I told (the Papermakers) before the round, show what Southwest Washington does. Show them what we’re made of.”
Three medalists, and two of the top three teams in the state — that is what Southwest Washington is made of this girls golf season.
