The Washington Department of Transportation is inviting the public to an open house for a discussion on a project to improve road conditions around Carson, in the Columbia River Gorge.

From 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Hegewald Center, 710 S.W. Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson, WSDOT will host an open house to present concepts to improve the intersection of state Highway 14 and Wind River Road.

There are two ways into Carson from Highway 14: Hot Springs Avenue, which has erosion issues, and Wind River Road, which turns at an angle too tight for truck traffic.

WSDOT will work with Skamania County to refine project priorities and examine the feasibility and benefits for each alternative based on the input gathered at the open house. WSDOT will present its preferred design in the fall.

Construction is set to begin in 2019. The project is slated to cost $6.3 million. It is funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the 2015 Connecting Washington transportation package.
