Continuing a tradition of success for teams from Clark County, Union won its second consecutive Rugby Oregon state championship on Saturday.

A 49-38 victory over the Portland Pumas at Delta Park in north Portland earned Union the Varsity Premiership Cup and completed an unbeaten season in this region for Union.

The match against the team from Central Catholic of Portland was close throughout, with Union staying a step ahead of the Pumas after taking an early 14-0 lead thanks to tries from Manu Sene and Brendon Curle. A try from Austin Lewis just before halftime put Union up 21-11 at the break.

In a back-and-forth second half, Rees Alferd, Brendon Curle, Chris Berry and Austin Lewis tallied tries for Union.

Avery Longrie made the two-point conversion kicks after all seven Union tries, including several from sharp angles near the touchline.

The man of the match honor was awarded to Max Burchett for his outstanding tackling and creative offensive play, according to Union coach David Curle.

Union graduates 13 seniors from this team, many of them original members of the program when it started in 2014.

That season, Prairie beat Union for the Varsity Premiership Cup title. Also in 2014, the Clark County Warriors won the title of the Club Championship, the Rugby Oregon division for clubs with players from multiple high schools.

According to coach Curle, Alferd and Hayden Ramsay plan to play rugby at Western Washington University. Brendon Curle hopes to play at Grand Canyon University and others will continue playing rugby in college.

Prairie 24, Summit 17 — In the Shield Final for seventh place in the Varsity Premiership, a Summit fumble preserved the win for the Wolf Pack over the team from Bend, Ore. Freshman Trevor Heasley was Prairie’s man of the match according to coach John Fletcher, who added that senior Eric Creamer made several try-saving tackles.

Clark County 50, North Clackamas 41 — In the match for seventh place in the Club Championship Division, the Warriors outscored the Crusaders. Details were not reported. The Club Championship is the division for teams with players from multiple high schools.

Battle Ground Lady Pack 34, North Clackamas 0 — Battle Ground took third place in the Rugby Oregon girls Club Championship Division for teams with players from multiple high schools.

Middle school rugby — The Lacamas Knights beat the Gresham Raiders 25-15 on Saturday to win the Rugby Oregon title for grades 7-8. This was the first season for the Lacamas program.

Summer rugby — Registration is open for the summer sevens rugby season that runs through July. For information about this and other summer programs, including a USA Rugby Regional Cup Tournament in June at Corvallis, Ore., visit www.rugbyoregon.com.
