An Oregon man accused of stabbing a man multiple times made a first appearance Monday in Clark County Superior Court.
Matthew D. Lopez, 21, of Estacada, Ore., appeared on suspicion of first-degree assault stemming from the early Sunday morning incident.
Clark County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched about 3:45 a.m. to Fat Dave’s restaurant, 1511 N.E. 99th St., for a possible assault. A man there, later identified as Lopez, said he had been assaulted and needed medical attention, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Lopez said he just wanted medical treatment and didn’t want to report a crime. He was transported to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, the affidavit said.
Shortly after 4 a.m., hospital staff called 911 to report that a man, identified as Zachary Wentworth, checked himself into the hospital and was suffering two stab wounds to his right side and back. He said Lopez stabbed him, according to court documents.
Wentworth told officers that Lopez had tried stealing video games from a party and was forced to leave. He said he felt bad for Lopez and offered to give him a ride home. While giving him a ride home, the two men got into a physical altercation and Lopez stabbed Wentworth, court records said.
Lopez refused to talk to deputies, but one deputy overhead Lopez tell his brother that he was going to kill Wentworth, the affidavit said.
On Monday, Judge Daniel Stahnke set Lopez’s bail at $30,000 and appointed defense attorney Tonya Rulli to represent him.
He will be arraigned June 3.
