The Union Titans soccer season came to an end with a nine-round penalty-kick tiebreaker Wednesday at Mariner High of Everett.

After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Marauders prevailed 8-7 on penalty kicks to advance to the Class 4A boys soccer quarterfinals.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the boys,” Union coach Kelcey Burris said. “They fought. They demonstrated the sense of brotherhood that is characteristic of this program.”

Union’s best chance to score during the match was a shot off the crossbar from Masaki Rhodes in the first half.

Taye Bunda, Jonathan Granados, Masaki Rhodes, Aidan McGinty  Cleon Keang, Jake Gould, and Michael Cordes converted their penalty kicks for Union in the tiebreaker. Union goalkeeper Brandon Wolter had three saves during the match and stopped one Mariner penalty kick.

Burris described the match as a really competitive end-to-end battle played in a great high school atmosphere.

Union finished the season 13-6-1 overall. The Titans shared the 4A Greater St. Helens League championship with Camas, and won a penalty-kick shootout victory at Mount Si to qualify for the state tournament.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how hard the guys worked and with how they improved all season,” Burris said.
