Breanne Smedley, who grew up in Clark County, is returning to the area to become the head coach for Columbia River volleyball.

“We were looking to move back to Vancouver,” said Smedley, who lives with her husband Brett on Whidbey Island. “We had our eye on River.”

The program, she said, is excellent, and the players understand the commitment needed to maintain a top program.

“They’re really grounded and rooted in excellence and tradition and integrity,” said Smedley, who graduated from Hockinson High School in 2007, then known as Breanne Graham.

Smedley, who played college volleyball at Western Washington and has been the head coach at Coupeville High School the past two years, will take over for Kaitlin Johnson, who resigned after two seasons as the head coach.

Johnson led Columbia River to the Class 3A state championship match this fall, with the Chieftains taking second place. River took home the third-place trophy in 2014.

Seton Catholic hires boys basketball coach — Seton Catholic High School did not need to look too far for its next boys basketball coach. The school announced last week that athletic director Phil Kent will be the coach.

Kent coached the Seton Catholic girls team for its first five seasons.

A retired law enforcement officer, Kent has more than 20 years of coaching experience, according to the release from the school.
