Several local Patriot Guard Riders will be part of the escort today when a piece of airport equipment, designed to receive the remains of fallen military personnel, makes its way through Clark County on its way to Washington, D.C.

The fallen-hero honor cart is starting its journey in Seattle. The first cart was created in 2011 by Alaska Airlines mechanics and baggage handlers who wanted to provide a respectful homecoming for bodies of fallen troops. The carts, which feature American flags and the insignia of service branches, have been donated to several airports across the country.

The group is scheduled to arrive at about 11:40 a.m. today in the Vancouver area before it heads for Oregon via Interstate 205.

Vancouver’s Lynn Vaughn, a regional Patriot Guard ride captain, said he wants motorists to be aware of the event and to drive courteously. In previous rides, Vaughn said, he has seen people in cars speed up, slow down or unexpectedly shift lanes, so they or their passengers can get closer for photos.

Some of the local escorts will leave Ontario, Calif., and head east on what’s called the Run for the Wall, arriving in Washington D.C., for the Memorial Day weekend.
