Aaron Sieczkowski of Vancouver thought it was time to get out of the gym and hike up steep and scenic Dog Mountain trail in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area east of Home Valley, a classic Northwest route.

So last week he asked training partners at Crossfit Fort Vancouver if they wanted to join him and five others said yes.

“So we each grabbed a 50-pound sandbag and took off,’’ said Ryan Hite. “Rather spontaneously actually.’’

It took the six about two hours to hike the approximately 3 miles and 2,900-feet elevation gain in eastern Skamania County and approximately 45 minutes to run down.

Some hikers asked us what we were training for, or just watched as we trudged up and ran down,’’ Hite said. “Some folks even took pictures and video of us. They couldn’t really wrap their heads around why we were carrying sandbags up a mountain, but we just wanted to get outside and have some fun! At least that is our definition of fun.’’
