An unattended candle led to the fire that burned a kitchen and displaced an adult and two children Friday night, according to the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Susan Anderson said a neighbor spotted a glow and heard a smoke alarm from another unit at the Chalet Villas apartments, at 8101 N.E. 13th Ave., around 9 p.m. Neighbors entered the apartment through the front door, which was unlocked, and found a fire burning on the kitchen counter.

They put out the fire using bowls of water drawn from the nearby sink, Anderson said.

Anderson said it appeared that a burning candle, without a holder, had been left on the counter while the home’s occupants were away. Much of the damage to the apartment was from smoke, she said, along with some damage to the counter and kitchen’s contents.

The American Red Cross responded, and the agency said it assisted an adult and two children in finding temporary lodging.

Anderson said that the incident is a good reminder to never leave candles unattended, and to keep candles in holders.
