Volunteers are needed by the U.S. Forest Service to help control noxious weeds near Coldwater Lake and Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center.
Volunteers must attend a training session at the Science and Learning Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 21 and commit to a minimum of two days this summer assisting with weed control.
The training will explain why the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is using herbicides versus past efforts that involved cutting and pulling weeds. Cutting and pulling tended to stimulate root growth and sprouting of buried seeds.
If the weather is favorable on May 21, the volunteers will stay overnight at and work from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 22.
To register, contact Allison Watson, volunteer programs manager for the Mount St. Helens Institute, before Wednesday at awatson@mshinstitute.org or call 360-891-5199.
