Weather Eye: We’ll cool off for a few days, then return to highs in the 80s

The calendar says it is May, but the weather says it is summer! Monday’s high of 86 was 21 degrees above average. Summer? Yes, indeed. It was in the low 80s Sunday. All this is on the heels of the warmest April on record.

Seattle aced out Vancouver by 1 degree with a high of 87. We thought those 85- to 90-degree highs in April were something. Will it last into summer and develop into a sweltering season?

As El Niño vanishes and La Niña is in the wings, I would be hard-pressed to say with certainty. Statistics suggest a warm, dry summer. More thunderstorms will likely mix in after a few hot days. The dog days may arrive early.

The clouds you saw Monday afternoon were trying to induce a few of those thunder boomers over the Cascades, but as of 5 p.m. not much over Clark County. Today through Thursday, we will have cooler temperatures and a risk of showers all three days. Nothing heavy, I don’t think.

Friday, high pressure rebounds us back into the 80s for Mother’s Day weekend. Plan a barbecue but be sure Mom doesn’t do any of the work. The weather will be as beautiful and nice as Mom, so celebrate.

It was a scorcher on Washington and Oregon beaches Sunday as east winds pushed the cooler marine air out to sea. All locations up and down the coast reported highs in the 80s. Several were warmer than the inland valleys.

I don’t see a whole lot of rain anytime soon, so it’s probably a good idea to start watering the plants and lawn. We can’t change the forecast, so let’s enjoy it while we can.
