Salmon Creek — Preschoolers from The Goddard School in Salmon Creek and Vancouver got an early experience in charity when they held a book drive to benefit Vancouver nonprofit Share. The schools collected 500 books as part of their initiative to encourage literacy throughout the community. The drive also served as an early introduction in teaching children the value of giving back. “Teaching children about helping people in need develops a foundation for compassion and cooperation,” said Michelle Solari, owner of The Salmon Creek Goddard School. Hillary McKinstry, owner of The Vancouver Goddard School, echoed that sentiment. “The book drive teaches the children that something that is enjoyable, such as reading and learning, can be shared with others and, in turn, enjoyed by all.” While the children and teachers at both schools were excited to participate in the drive, those at Share were equally excited to be the recipients of their generosity. “Studies continue to show that children who have access to books in their homes attain a higher level of education,” said Diane McWithey, executive director of Share Vancouver. “Share is delighted to receive this fabulous donation of books from The Goddard School.”
