College Notebook: Prairie pair Asplund, Bracken garner CCC honors

Warriors both strong at Pacific Combined Events

Corban University sophomore Jason Bracken and freshman Lindsay Asplund were named Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s and women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, after the Pacific Combined Events meet held Monday and Tuesday in Forest Grove, Ore.

Asplund won the heptathlon, while Bracken established a new school record while finishing second in the decathlon to an NCAA Division I athlete.

Both are graduates of Prairie High School.

Bracken totaled 6,125 points, shattering his own previous record of 5,650 while winning the shot put (43-0 1/2 ), the discus (119-6 1/2 ) and the javelin (163-7 3/4 ). Other results: 6-3 1/4 in high jump, 52.60 in the 400, 4:53.14 in the 1,500, 11.70 in the 100, 19-9 3/4 in the long jump, 18.67 in the 110 hurdles and 11-5 3/4 in pole vault.

In her first collegiate track and field competition, Asplund — who also plays basketball for the Warriors —totaled 3,617 points, winning by just two points. She won the 800 meters, the final event, in 2 minutes, 25.22 seconds to claim the title. Her total is the fourth highest in program history.

Asplund was in sixth place before the 800. Her other results: 17.79 in 100 hurdles, 4-7 in high jump, 26-8 in shot put, 28.54 in the 200, 14-11 1/4 in long jump, 85-9 3/4 in javelin.

Times and distances in the multi-events are converted into point scores and totaled to determine final placings.

Track and field

Utah’s Lanford makes heptathlon debut

University of Utah sophomore Madison Lanford placed third at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational on Thursday and Friday in her first heptathlon competition.

The Skyview High School graduate totaled 4,235 points by recording lifetime bests in six of the seven events.

Lanford was fifth after Thursday’s four events. She had times of 15.25 seconds the 100-meter hurdles and 25.73 seconds in the 200-meter dash, and marks of 4 feet, 7 1/2 inches in the high jump and 30-10 1/4 in the shot put.

On Friday, she moved up to third after marks of 14-10 1/4 in the long jump and 96-0 in the javelin, and running the 800 in 2:29.27.

She was second in the 800 and third in the 200 and javelin. Lanford’s Utes teammate Lauren McCluskey placed second with 4,268 points.

Before the competition, Utah head coach Kyle Kepler told utahutes.com: “We are excited to see how they do and provide a baseline for where they need to go and what we think they can do.”

After the heptathlon the previous two days, Lanford also placed eighth in the 400 hurdles Saturday.

Women’s basketball

Lindsley named NAIA All-America

The Masters College junior guard Megan Lindsley was named First Team NAIA Division I All-America for the second time.

The Prairie High School graduate was also named All-Golden State Athletic Conference for the second time. Lindsley led the team in free throw percentage (82.9) and was second in scoring (12.3 points a game), assists (62) and 3-pointers (39).

The Lady Mustangs finished 25-6, falling 62-55 to Campbellsville in the second round of the NAIA national tournament. The team’s 59-57 win in the first round over Loyola of Louisiana was the program’s first at the national tournament since 2008.

Men’s golf

GNAC honors Cavs golfer Huddleston

Concordia University sophomore Tanner Huddleston was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Week after taking medalist honors in the one-round Spring Break Invitational tournament Saturday in Walla Walla.

The Woodland High School graduate shot 4-under 68 to win the title by three strokes.

Hockinson High School graduate Nick Huff was the Cavaliers’ third scorer, shooting 1-over 73.

Huddleston shot 77-70-80—227 to place sixth at Northwest Nazarene University’s Crusader Invitational tournament Monday and Tuesday in Nampa, Idaho. Huff was 16th with a 234 total.

Softball

NWC honors Sorensen

George Fox University sophomore right-hander Madison Sorensen was named Northwest Conference Softball Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week.

The Woodland High School graduate made four appearances including three complete games during March 21-27, going 3-0 with an earned run average of 1.09. She recorded 21 strikeouts, allowing 11 hits and eight walks.
