Democratic caucuses set for Saturday

There’s a reason Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former President Bill Clinton stopped in Vancouver to campaign this week.

This Saturday, the state’s Democrats will caucus, taking the first step in picking whom the party will nominate for president.

Democrats will gather in Clark County and across the state starting at 10 a.m.

Those who will be 18 years old by Nov. 8 and declare they are a Democrat can participate in the caucuses.

In addition to electing delegates pledged to presidential candidates, it’s a chance for voters to meet their neighbors and set and guide the party’s platform.

For much of the state, the delegates elected on Saturday will move on to legislative district caucuses scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 17. For Clark County Democrats, they will combine their Legislative District caucus with their county convention to be held on May 1, at Skyview High School.

From there, a smaller group of delegates will move on to the congressional district caucuses scheduled for May 21 through June 19. The final 118 delegates will go on to the Democratic National Convention, scheduled for July 25-28.

State Republicans previously held their caucuses, and will indicate their preference for president based on the results of a May 24 primary.
