Officials have been searching the Columbia River near Astoria, Ore., after receiving reports that a small airplane may have crashed there Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The crash was reported about 3:50 p.m. in the middle of the river approximately two miles northeast of Astoria, according to the Coast Guard.

Crews on a Coast Guard helicopter searched the area and saw a small sheen on the water and some bubbling but were unable to confirm a crash.

Bad weather caused the helicopter to return to base, and a dive team from Clatsop County, Ore., was unable to search due to water conditions.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross said the search is scheduled to resume at dawn Thursday.
