Sacramento State University senior Kalliah McCartney of Vancouver was named Gymnast of the Year by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation at the conclusion of the MPSF championships Saturday in the Hornets’ gym, The Nest.
McCartney, a graduate of CAM High School in Battle Ground who trained at Naydenov Gymnastics of Vancouver and Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland, was the only gymnast named All-MPSF in each of the four events — bars, beam, floor and vault — plus all-around.
Those honors were announced Thursday.
McCartney broke her own school record in the all-around at the federation meet, tying for the second best in MPSF history with a 39.450. She scored 9.900 on vault and floor, 9.850 on beam and 9.800 on bars.
She won the vault title, shared the beam title and tied for second on bars and floor.
McCartney will compete next in all-around at the NCAA Salt Lake Regional on April 2.

UW’s Gilbert earns All-America honors
University of Washington sophomore Colby Gilbert placed eighth in the 3,000 meters at the NCAA Division I indoor track and field championships March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala., also helping UW’s distance medley relay to a runner-up finish.
The Skyview High School graduate earned All-America status in both events, adding them to his cross country honors from the fall 2015 season.
Gilbert and teammate Izaic Yorks “navigated an initially slow pace with Yorks cruising in the middle and Gilbert content at the back early on,” according to UW website gohuskies.com. “With four laps to go, both had worked their way up into the top-six. A crowded final sprint saw the top nine men finish within three seconds of each other, but when the dust settled, Yorks had come across in fourth-place in 8:02.24. Gilbert had some misfortune as he was blocked by another runner’s late stumble, potentially costing him a couple spots, but he still grabbed the eighth spot to get on the podium in 8:02.83.”
Washington’s distance medley relay finish in 9:28.00 was the best in school history, surpassing a trio of fifth-place finishes from the mid-2000s.
“Gilbert had an eventful opening leg, getting stuck on the rail and jostled but making a key move to the outside late and pushing up into the lead,” according to the website.
Washington totaled 24 points, the most in program history at indoor nationals and good for sixth place.
