Weather Eye: Fickle March no stranger in great Northwest

OK, we do the outdoor Easter egg hunts on Saturday, got it? My thoughts in Sunday’s column were that Easter Sunday would be dry but nature will hold no tears back and dampen the holiday. However, with March being as fickle and unpredictable as a rabbit, we could bounce back to plan A. But living here in the great Northwest requires us to have a plan B, right?

Nothing really stops us from our outdoor fun — activities move on rain or shine. There sure wasn’t much shine Monday as clouds and showers kept streaming up from the south as an area of low pressure spun dizzyingly like a top off the coast.

We have talked about how quickly our local weather can change during the month of March. You know, sunny and 60 degrees one hour and thunder and hail the next hour with a chilling breeze.

Weather observer and photographer Tyler Mode of Battle Ground, dedicated reader and information provider to this column, was on a business trip in Pueblo, Colo. He wrote Sunday, “Snow yesterday, 60 degrees today and 80 degrees tomorrow.” Sure enough, it was 81 degrees Monday after a chilly 23 degrees for a low temperature. He has seen the mercury drop to 14 degrees and rise to 81 degrees. Talk about an abrupt change, a Rocky Mountain “high” at its best.

I mentioned the other day that it could stop raining for the remainder of the month and we would be in great shape as far as record-keeping goes. As of 4 p.m. Monday, our total in Vancouver was just shy of 5 inches (4.90), 2.38 inches above average. The average mean temperature was 48.7 degrees, 1.5 degrees above average.

You could summarize the month so far as a wet and warm month. I seem to forget the warm days and can only feel the colder days right now. Oh, sunshine, where are you?

Wednesday and Saturday it should make its appearance for more than a silly hour or so. Let’s hope!
