Chiles wins junior all-around at Italy gymnastics meet

Vancouver gymnast Jordan Chiles won the junior all-around title Saturday for Team USA at the City of Jesolo Trophy meet in Jesolo, Italy.

Chiles’ all-around score of 58.25 was more than two points better than the runner up. Chiles qualified for Sunday’s event finals in all four events with her scores of 15.70 on the vault, 14.10 on the uneven parallel bars, 14.30 on the balance beam and 14.15 for the floor exercise.

Chiles, 14, is a freshman at Prairie High School who trains at Naydenov Gymnastics. This is her third year as a member of the USA Gymnastics junior national team.

In the City of Jesolo juniors competition, the United States swept the three podium places with Emma Malabuyo taking silver and Gabby Perea taking bronze.

In the senior all-around competition, Gabby Douglas led the United States to a podium sweep. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Douglas’ all-around score was 59.65. Ragan Smith (59.05) took silver and Laurie Hernandez (58.55) took bronze.

Gymnasts cannot compete at the senior level until the year they turn 16. Chiles turns 15 in April so will be eligible for senior competition in 2017.
