Go for March 18: Easter egg hunts, art show, opera, roadsters, brews

1. Early hunting

In the lead-up to spring and a colorful Easter, local groups will offer community egg hunts beginning this weekend. All these events will happen rain or shine.

St. John Lutheran Church will host a public Easter egg hunt dubbed an “Easter E-G-G-stravaganza” as children fifth grade and younger are invited to seek out plastic eggs filled with candy on the church grounds. Baskets will be provided, followed by a free, light lunch, 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. March 19 at St. John Lutheran Church, 11005 N.E. Highway 99, Vancouver. Mountain View Christian Center and the Christ Community of Ridgefield will break out 15,000 eggs for its Easter Egg Hunt at 5 to 7 p.m. March 23. The egg hunt will be divided by age groups. There also will be food and refreshments, a bouncy house and prizes at the Mountain View Christian Center, 2810 259th St., Ridgefield. The city of Washougal will present its EGGstravaganza, an Easter egg hunt for the community, from 3 to 5 p.m. March 23. Children in fifth grade or younger can look for 5,000 plastic eggs hidden among straw bales. Participants will enter the area in small groups to find six different colored eggs filled with candy and coupons. There also will be treats, balloons and activities for all ages in the Reflection Plaza, 1703 Main St., Washougal. 2. Spring into art

The Battle Ground Art Alliance will host its 15th annual Spring Show and Sale, celebrating the artistic talent of Southwest Washington with a juried fine art and craft show. Visitors can view and purchase art in a variety of mediums, along with voting for the people’s choice award. There will be live music by local musicians, and this year’s themed exhibit will feature interpretations on “Below the Surface.” A meet-the-artist public reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 19, with Battle Ground Mayor Philip Johnson presenting the art show awards at 6:30 p.m. The show will run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 19 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 20 at the Battle Ground Community Center, 921 E. 3. Vocal magic

The Vancouver Symphony Chamber Series will present “The Magic of Opera,” a collaborative concert with the Portland Opera, which will be celebrating its 2016 season. Musicians from the symphony orchestra will be joined by opera artists Katrina Galka, Felicia Moore, Abigail Dock, Aaron Short and Ryan Thorn, plus with Chorusmaster Nicholas Fox. The concert will feature arias from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd,” Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” and Gioachino Rossini’s “The Italian Girl in Algiers.” The concert begins at 3 p.m. March 20 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. 4. Chrome shines

Celebrating its 60th annual event, the Portland Roadster Show highlights the culture and art of hot rodding, with displays of cars, trucks and motorcycles. There also will be vintage automobile memorabilia, a high school car challenge, Rose City Brush Bash, demonstrations by builders and vendors. The show is open noon to 9 p.m. March 18, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 19 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 20 at the Portland Expo Center, 2060 N. Marine Drive, Portland. 5. Spring brewing

The spring edition of the Vancouver Brewfest will feature a mix of seasonal beers and college basketball with a free throw contest and broadcasts of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Along with more than 70 craft beers from many local and regional brewers, there also will be a whiskey bar that includes samplings from whiskey distillers, and cider and mead makers. The beer festival is open 3 to 10 p.m. March 18 and noon to 9 p.m. March 19 at the Vancouver Landing Amphitheater, 100 Columbia St., Vancouver.
