Hazel Dell — A handful of green-thumbed Clark College students from Veronica Brock’s “Food and Your Health” classes assisted Washington State University master gardeners as they set up for spring planting at the Hazel Dell School Garden. Construction on the garden began in 2004 with the purpose of providing nutritious food and education on healthy living to students at Hazel Dell Elementary School, Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington, and other community members. The students spread bark chips, weeded and pruned to wake the garden from winter sleep and prepare raised beds for the growing season. “Because of their hard work, the garden will provide produce for 25 families of community gardeners, the Home Stead homeless shelter, and the school’s weekend backpack program,” coordinator Barbara Nordstrom said in an email about the planting.
