Officers fanned out around the Vancouver Heights neighborhood, south of Garrison Square, following a high-speed chase on East Mill Plain Boulevard early Friday afternoon and arrested one person.

Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said an officer on patrol was attempting to make a traffic stop at about 1 p.m. when the driver pulled away, prompting a chase.

The chase went along Mill Plain, and the driver struck another vehicle and finally stopped after hitting a tree. Kapp said no one was hurt in the first crash.

According to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian, the fleeing driver reached speeds of around 90 mph on the city street.

The fleeing car stopped near a U-Haul dealership at East Mill Plain Boulevard and North Garrison Road.

Kapp said both the driver and a passenger fled on foot. Officers detained the passenger nearby.

The driver ran off, heading south into the Vancouver Heights neighborhood.

Officers found the man on the roof of a nearby house. Kapp said he came down and was taken into custody.

His name was not available, but Kapp said he was arrested pending multiple charges, including attempting to elude police, hit-and-run and possession of methamphetamine, along with multiple outstanding warrants.

Kapp said it didn’t appear the passenger was arrested.
