Saint Martin’s University senior Shannon Porter was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after breaking her own school record in the 1,500 meters at the Puget Sound Invitational, the first outdoor meet of the season.

The Hockinson High School graduate won the event with a time of 4 minutes, 32.30 seconds, a personal best by three seconds and a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II championships.

Porter’s previous school record was 4:35.32 set last season.

“Shannon is fit right now so it is no surprise on the time she ran,” SMU coach Jim Brewer told the website smusaints.com. “She is gearing up for indoor nationals and is looking forward to representing Saint Martin’s University in Kansas.”

The NCAA-II outdoor championships are Thursday through Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan.

The previous week, Porter finished third in the 3,000 meters at the SPU Final Qualifier on Feb. 27 at Seattle Pacific University.

Porter’s time of 9:38.79 broke her own school record of 9:51.99.

That result put Porter in 11th place on the NCAA-II performance list.

“Shannon ran awesome,” Brewer told smusaints.com. “We had a good plan going into today’s race and she executed perfectly. Shannon ran a smart race with a lot of heart. Three laps into the race she made a strategic move surging in the race that helped her stay in a fast rhythm. Super proud and excited for her.”

At the GNAC indoor championships Feb. 20-21 at Nampa, Idaho, Porter finished third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:15.87 and fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:57.88.
