Shumway Neighborhood — Several members of Friends of Trees pulled double duty for the environment on Feb. 20 when they traveled by bike around west Vancouver planting trees in the neighborhood. After meeting up at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for early-morning coffee and breakfast, 22 crews of volunteers planted 210 trees throughout the neighborhood. One of the planting crews traveled by bike to transport the trees, tools, and volunteers to planting locations. All the other crews drove vehicles. More than 200 volunteers came out on Saturday in support of the planting. They staged the parking lot for planting crews, set up breakfast, transported and planted trees, cooked food for volunteers, and helped clean up. Even city council members Anne McEnerny-Ogle and Ty Stober showed up to plant a few trees.

Over the course of the next two weeks, the group plans on planting an additional 35 trees, for a total of 245 trees to be planted in west Vancouver neighborhoods this winter, all by Friends of Trees. Friends of Trees is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring people together to plant and care for city trees and green spaces in Pacific Northwest communities.
