The La Center teen recovering from a serious head injury remains in critical condition but is showing signs of improvement.

Colin Monahan, 16, has opened his eyes, responded to commands and even gave a thumbs up and showed a smile, according to an update posted to his page on GoFundMe, a fundraising website.

Colin, a junior in high school, has been in critical condition at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center since Feb. 16, when police say he darted in front of a pickup in an effort to hop on the vehicle’s hood. The driver, Colin’s friend, was unaware of what happened and continued driving slowly through the parking lot, located near Holley Park in La Center. Colin fell and was struck by the truck, police said.

The donation account for Colin’s medical expenses has reached more than $8,000. Anyone interested in donating can do so at www.gofundme.com/h8pzcsjw.
