Camas School District Superintendent Mike Nerland will retire at the end of the school year after 33 years in education, the past 11 spent leading Camas. Deputy Superintendent Jeff Snell will replace Nerland starting July 1.
During his time as superintendent, Nerland has overseen the Camas School District as it grew by 1,500 students, and three schools opened: Grass Valley Elementary School, Woodburn Elementary School and Hayes Freedom High School.
Before taking over as superintendent in 2005, Nerland worked as the principal of Lacamas Heights Elementary School and Camas High School.
Nerland sent a letter to district staff members Tuesday morning letting them know about his retirement.
Snell has been the district’s deputy superintendent since 2011, and has 21 years of experience in education, working as a math teacher, coach, associate principal and principal.
“The world we live in is changing every day faster than it ever has before,” Snell said in a press release from the district. “Our vision is that each one of our students will graduate prepared for life’s challenges — lifelong learners who are independent and motivated, compassionate, ethical and contributing members of society.”
