Three people remained in the hospital Thursday, two days after a head-on crash east of Washington State University Vancouver.

Matthew Welsh, 21, of Battle Ground was driving a 2006 Hyundai Accent east on Northeast 159th Street at about 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, Clark County sheriff’s Deputy Shaun Robertson said.

Welsh drove over loose gravel and began to fishtail as he lost control of his vehicle and struck an oncoming westbound 2013 Dodge Ram, Robertson said.

Firefighters had to cut Welsh out of the Hyundai. He and the two occupants of the pickup, Brush Prairie residents Douglas Olson, 75, and Patsy Maxwell, 74, were all injured and taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

All three were listed in satisfactory condition on Thursday.

Robertson said that he believed speed was a factor in the crash and said that Welsh will face a charge of second-degree negligent driving.
